When we first heard German band Riches Of The Poor<\/a>, we were struck by how much they reminded us of bands of the 80s, such as The Cure, and New Order – throw in some early U2 as well. And given they’re actually named after a line in a song by The Smiths, it’s not too hard to imagine why we got this impression.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

As with previous single, Morning After’, their latest track, ‘Please’, is from their upcoming album, ‘Long Way Down’, which is set for release on June 19. The new song is heavily guitar based, and reminds us sonically in parts of The Cars’ song, ‘Drive’ – but not all parts, it’s all New Order really. It’s incredible to find a brand new song that could just as easily be a freshly discovered track from an 80s rock star. It’s certainly a sound I can get hold of.<\/p>\n

‘Please’ is accompanied by a music video, which focuses on a woman in a hurry. She’s in a taxi heading for the airport, and can’t get there fast enough – but foiled by the traffic and the driver, who seems to be making it his job to delay her even further. She accidentally leaves her bag in the cab, and races in, to where we discover she’s hoping to catch a musician, guitar case in hand before he takes his flight. Sadly she misses him, and it’s revealed that she’s heavily pregnant – we don’t know if he’s aware of the baby, or if she is ever able to tell him – but in the end, she returns to the taxi and presumably goes back home.<\/p>\n

The clip is the perfect match for the melancholy nature of the track, and brings to mind my own taxi journey through the streets of Berlin to the sprawling mass that is Berlin-Tegel Airport…a very melancholy place indeed, especially if you miss the one you were there to meet.<\/p>\n
