{"id":51296,"date":"2019-07-12T16:48:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T15:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/?p=51296"},"modified":"2019-07-12T16:48:06","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T15:48:06","slug":"dont-go-changing-aly-aj-take-sanctuary-at-londons-scala-july-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/2019\/07\/dont-go-changing-aly-aj-take-sanctuary-at-londons-scala-july-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t Go Changing: Aly &#038; AJ Take Sanctuary At London&#8217;s Scala July 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Disney Channel is responsible for a wide birth of talent\u2026I could spend hours talking about Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Bridgit Mendler, Miley Cyrus\u2026you name it\u2026There\u2019s been a slight resurgence in nostalgia this year with the comebacks of Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus but one underrated Disney duo is Aly &amp; AJ \u2013 now they have long dropped their ties to Disney and have been out fielding their own music path in the last year or two\u2026the sound is a nice progressive change for them\u2026nothing too crazy and out there\u2026it\u2019s a more mature Aly &amp; AJ and they finally brought themselves to the UK after 12 years (and even then it was one club gig; not even a proper show). In the UK we have been deprived of seeing \u2018Chemicals React\u2019 or \u2018Greatest Time of Year\u2019 live; sadly we still are, however we got the girls in their full glory and some other great tracks.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Random Ad stuff --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-ad-slot=\"3107208401\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2076862002005673\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<p><script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Scala was packed. I\u2019ve never been to the venue before and managed to squeeze my way to the third row\u2026 now the girls were on late\u2026 it wasn\u2019t until 9.30pm that the girls hit the stage with a highly smoky staging and \u2018Church\u2019\u2026 it really is the perfect show opener with it\u2019s haunting \u201cI do bad things for the sake of good times\u201d. A true defiant opener and a nice hello from the girls\u2026 they bewildered us with tracks from their two EPs \u2018Ten Years\u2019 and \u2018Sanctuary\u2019 and staging was minimal but a strong narrative was told from the girls vocals, their lyrics, their dynamics\u2026 their sisters but they certainly have a strong bond. There were some tracks I was really excited to witness live \u2013 \u2018Promises\u2019 for one as it feels like a horror movie every time I listen to it; so to engage with it live was just as haunting and terrifying and with an added audience participation of the series of \u201cooh\u201d that is chanted throughout the song\u2026 it was a great performance and exceeded it\u2019s recorded version, title track \u2018Sanctuary\u2019 is a glorious little number with one of the best melodies and lyric \u201cyou\u2019re my north star; I will follow you to take me home\u201d\u2026 the track is a love letter to the fans who have been patient and with the girls from the beginning\u2026surprisingly \u2018With You\u2019 was absolutely magical live\u2026I wasn\u2019t a big fan of the recorded version, but the live rendition was so magical and wonderful and unique and bizarre\u2026 the track is all over the place sonically and live just works\u2026 sorry to repeat myself but\u2026magical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The girls have not been shy of their love for the LGBT+ community; proceeds of the tour are going towards LGBT+ charity The Trevor Project and they wrote their track \u2018Good Love\u2019 for the LGBT+ community and featured a series of different LBGT+ performers in the video for their recent track \u2018Star Maps\u2019 \u2013 a bombastic and toe-tapping number about the pressures of Hollywood.
