Beau’s harmonies come in about halfway through the first minute, sweet and light, the perfect accompaniment to Joe’s tenor. Her vocals retain the same rich sadness as Joe’s, the pair’s partnership reminiscent of that of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash – with Joe taking the lead, but Beau providing a support that makes the song a whole. ‘One Thing After Another’ feels timeless; it’s raw and unpolished, there’s a sense that it’s been recorded live and not over-produced: this adds to its ageless quality.
