Their first album was 20 years in the making, but\u00a0US duo\u00a0After Death Plan\u00a0<\/strong>have wasted no time in coming up with a follow up to 2017’s\u00a0Literature<\/em>.<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n

Clearly energised by the response to their debut, engineer Lesley Ann Fogle<\/strong> and multi-instrumentalist Constantine Hondroulis<\/strong>, have manufactured another eclectic collection of what they call\u00a0American Gothic Nous Rock<\/em><\/strong>.<\/h4>\r\n

The familiar love of language is firmly in evidence, most notably on title track Psycho Social Sexual,<\/strong><\/em> but while the first record drew on books for inspiration, there’s a more varied spectrum of influences at play here.<\/p>\r\n

Neil Harvey\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(see below video) imagines the experience of a haunted soul on an 18th century gunship, while the spectre of a second US civil war looms large on\u00a0Killed In Days<\/strong><\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\r\n

The primitive Blues rumble of tracks like\u00a0Walking<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>recall early\u00a0PJ Harvey<\/strong>, while elsewhere the mix of tribal rhythms and avant garde programming brings to mind\u00a0Peter Gabriel<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

After Death Plan – Constantine Hondroulis and Lesley Ann Fogle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n

The classically-trained Fogle certainly knows her way round a mixing desk and she’s no mean lyricist either, her streams of consciousness poetry inviting repeated listens.<\/p>\r\n

Her singing has drawn comparisons with\u00a0The Kills<\/strong>‘\u00a0Alison Mosshart<\/strong> and\u00a0she’s a\u00a0 versatile vocalist, ranging from the ethereal to the guttural – sometimes in the space of a single song.<\/p>\r\n

Houndroulis’ fluid basslines provide the stable building blocks for some of the album’s more ambitious flights of fancy.<\/p>\r\n

The duo’s long musical history pays dividends, with a host of friends and former bandmates from the Columbus, Ohio underground adding to the rich musical tapestry.<\/p>\r\n

Earwig<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Lizard McGee<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/span>contributes glam-punk guitar to\u00a0Neil Harvey\u00a0<\/em>and gentle acoustic to the lilting\u00a0Mixing Chemicals<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

Milan Karcic,\u00a0<\/strong>of\u00a0Salt Horse<\/strong>,\u00a0lends a dazzling Balkan-inspired solo to the title track and there’s sax from Bob Ray Starker <\/strong>(Whoa Nellie!<\/strong>) on\u00a0You Play Adult<\/strong><\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Standout tracks include experimental dance anthem\u00a0Digging In The Fire<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0the mournful multi-track choral vocals of\u00a0Emma Nation<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and the eerie, arid, desert Afro-beat of\u00a0Sinner<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

Artistic, intelligent and with more musical ideas than is probably legally allowed on one album,\u00a0Psycho Social Sexual\u00a0<\/em>should keep you coming back for more.<\/p>\r\n
