Alt-pop artist Daym returned with anthemic track \u2018Critical\u2019 earlier this month, as he celebrates ambiguity through his artform. In conversation with Malvika Padin<\/a>, he gets candid about the message he wants to convey with his music, and his desire to use his platform for social commentary, and discussing important issues.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

What is the message\/inspiration behind \u2018Critical\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Life is short, so we might as well get along<\/a>“. The inspiration came from having a healing, long-distance phone call with my mother after a really tough day. Having a ‘message’ is sort of funny coming from anyone, let alone a bloke like me with a laptop and some instruments. What I hoped to deliver with ‘Critical’ is a blank canvas of friendship insecurities and the idea of navigating the murky waters of real world drama. To love and let go of social anxieties.<\/p>\n

Describe your sound in 3 words. How has it evolved?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wonky, funky, visceral. I feel as though my own music evolves as my palette gets broader. It’s in the constant pursuit to bring myself shivers.<\/p>\n

If you collaborate with any artist who would that be and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Janelle Mon\u00e1e. I find her work extraordinary. She actually breaks the fourth wall, but in real life.<\/p>\n

What message do you hope to convey to listeners through your music?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You are valued. Find resilience and have boundless love, because why the f— not?<\/p>\n

What\u2019s been a really memorable moment in your career so far? What plans have you got for this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A super memorable moment has been performing at The Satellite in LA for the event Dance Yourself Clean. It was the epitome of finding love in a crowd of strangers. This year I plan to perform in a few more cities as well as release a slew of new music.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s one question no one asks in an interview you wish you were asked?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ah interesting question! I’d like to be asked about any pressing issue in social commentary. Just want to use what little platform I have to give a voice to other people. I hope my art can become a group chat.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s one song on your personal playlist you\u2019ve had on repeat recently and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

‘Another Lifetime’, by Nao is on my everyday playlist. It makes me feel a sense of saudade.\u00a0The longing throughout that track humbles me and gets me out of my own head.<\/p>\n
