In conversation with storytelling songstress Cecil, she tells us more about her brand of \u2018off pop\u2019 music, reveals what she\u2019d be doing if not for music and tells the story of her still broken nose.<\/h4>\n

What would you say is the inspiration behind \u2018Black Maria\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My inspiration is from a film called \u2018Blanche Fury\u2019. So I\u2019ve named myself after my great uncle Cecil McGivern and he was one of the screenplay writers for that film and I gained a lot of inspiration from because when I watched it, I loved the plot. I thought it was a great film, but there were a few things I\u2019d have done differently if I wrote the screenplay. I would have changed the plot twist and the era of the film. So that\u2019s where the inspiration came from.<\/p>\n

Is this storytelling aspect something new or has it always been part of your music?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I feel like my music has transitioned. I always used to write about my own experiences. This is the first time I\u2019ve ever watched a film and gone \u2018I have to write about this and maybe change a few things\u2019. That\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve done that.<\/p>\n
