The pale hordes who descend on Whitby for the biannual Goth Weekend may just have found the perfect soundtrack for their journey.<\/h4>\n

With esteemed\u00a0Cocteau Twins\/This Mortal Coil<\/strong> producer John Fryer<\/strong><\/a> at the controls, York-based duo\u00a0Mary and the Ram<\/strong>\u00a0have come up with a modernist take on coffin-rattlers like\u00a0Bauhaus<\/strong>,\u00a0Love and Rockets<\/strong> and The\u00a0<\/strong>Sisters of Mercy.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Fryer is also famed for his work with\u00a0Nine Inch Nails<\/strong> and you can feel the brooding influence of\u00a0Trent Reznor<\/strong> on the electronic post-punk twisted love story of debut A-Side\u00a0The Cross<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nick Cave<\/strong>-like gospel handclaps give way to nagging, insistent keyboard line and penetrating subterranean vocals.<\/p>\n

Both band members boast strong pedigrees of the Northern arts scene.<\/p>\n

Singer, guitarist, programmer\u00a0Kiran Tanna\u00a0<\/strong>founded contemporary dance company VIAPERFORMANCE,<\/strong> while drummer Dom<\/strong>\u00a0Smith\u00a0<\/strong>is the editor of Soundsphere<\/strong><\/a> magazine.

Their appetite for drama is evident on the B-side to the new single, seven-minute opus\u00a0The Dream<\/strong><\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Described by Tanna as an attempt to capture a ritualised, pervasive feeling, it’s a hallucinatory spoken-word monologue set to washes of electronica, which explodes into a throbbing mass of overdriven guitar and pulsating beats.<\/p>\n

The single will be followed by an EP in the Summer, with live UK dates to follow.<\/p>\n
