Last Gap Collective trace their origins to Cassopolis, Michigan, population less than 2000, from where Jay Jaksonn and his best friend Lakeshore Drew moved to Kalamazoo, in order to play open mic nights, garnering exposure and mastering their craft. Networking with like-minded artists, especially those with a love of hip-hop, they took on the challenge of bringing that particular genre to life in Kalamazoo, and slowly but surely gained respect and acceptance, and venues started to book the group.<\/p>\n
The current collective, featuring eleven artists, have come together with ‘Small Town, which also features an instantly memorable video. Opening with a soft, jazzy guitar line, following by smooth sax tones, the rhythm section then drops in with an irresistible groove. The lyrics, “I\u2019m livin\u2019 in a small town called K-Zoo, still dreamin\u2019 from a big town point of view\u201d become a focal point when sung by the group’s female vocalist, Ashley Hicks. Quite apart from having to move to a big city in order to achieve great things, LGC share the belief that someone with big-picture ambitions won’t be stopped by apparent physical limitations, particularly in this day and age, with the world-wide reach of the internet.<\/p>\n
