I was lucky enough to catch\u00a0Suzie\u00a0Stapleton\u00a0<\/strong>opening for\u00a0Bo<\/a><\/strong>ss Hog<\/strong><\/a> at the Hackney Oslo<\/strong> earlier this year.<\/h4>\n

Playing for someone else’s audience is never easy but, despite wrestling with some recalcitrant loop pedals, a solo Stapleton secured a great reception.<\/h4>\n

The Sydney-born singer-guitarist won over the crowd with her smoky, rasping voice and full bodied swamp-blues playing style and she’s been attracting the attention of some big names on the underground scene.<\/p>\n

Stapleton provided guest vocals on\u00a0Lydia Lunch<\/strong> and\u00a0Cypress Grove<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Under The Covers<\/strong><\/em> album and will feature on the latest edition of\u00a0The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>inspired by the late\u00a0Gun Club\u00a0<\/strong>mainman.<\/p>\n

For this single release she is backed by two of the best in the business\u00a0Ian White<\/strong> of\u00a0Gallon Drunk<\/strong> on drums and\u00a0Gavin Jay\u00a0<\/strong>(Jim Jones and The Righteous Mind<\/strong>)\u00a0on bass.<\/p>\n

There’s hint of fellow countryman\u00a0Nick Cave\u00a0<\/strong>about the way the song crashes into an explosive chorus, after a haunting, whispered intro, but Stapleton is no mere slavish copycat.<\/p>\n

There’s a singular, seductive warmth to her guitar sound and some sublime string-bending on the solo she unleashes towards the end of the track.<\/p>\n

It’s mature song-writing which should see the London-based Stapleton moving from supporting star to headline act before very long.<\/p>\n
