display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"650\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NHk1R3kKYL8?version=3&#038;rel=0&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A few years older than his bandmates and the veteran of numerous other outfits, Chadwick assembled the group through an advert in the music press.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It didn\u2019t take him long to realise the line-up of Bickers, co-vocalist\/guitarist\u00a0<strong>Andrea Heukamp<\/strong>, <strong>Chris Groothuizen<\/strong> (bass) and drummer <strong>Pete Evans<\/strong>, had something very special.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIt just felt different and it grew quite quickly and the sound evolved and there was just a natural chemistry,&#8221; he remembers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe used to do a residency at this pub called The Three Crowns in Stoke Newington. We had to play two sets, we\u2019d get paid 100 quid and we had to bring our own PA! But it was a free gig and so there was quite a big crowd and about the third time we played it, we just really started to soar and it was almost like the band was playing itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The buzz around the group saw them signing with ultra-hip indie label Creation, releasing the excellent debut single <strong><em>Shine On<\/em><\/strong> in 1987.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Things really took off the following year, when the\u00a0shimmering <strong><em>Christine\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>went to the top of the independent charts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe did a gig at that time, just a small gig, and that was the first time that we noticed we had an audience,\u201d Chadwick recalls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe\u2019d sold out a small gig, and that was really exciting, but within six months we were playing to 1,000 people a night. That was a big change! And it was incredible! It just soared! He was really big for us, John Peel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With the band developing a formidable live reputation and Chadwick and Bickers being mentioned in the same breath as The Smiths\u2019 <strong>Morrissey<\/strong> and <strong>Johnny Marr<\/strong>, it soon became apparent that The House of Love were outgrowing Creation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t that impressed with Creation at the time. It was quite sort of shambolic.\u201d says Chadwick. \u201cI knew that the group could be better presented. They [Creation] were just so amateurish at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cHaving said that, their enthusiasm and their individuality was obvious and we would definitely have been better off if we\u2019d stayed with them. He was just one of these people, who just wanted to join the fucking band,\u201d Chadwick recalls gloomily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cHe ground me down, his sort of obsessiveness, and in retrospect, wrong kind of attitude just eroded my confidence. And, as soon as that goes, you\u2019re fucked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Creation impresario <strong>Alan McGee <\/strong>was retained as manager, repeating a trick he had performed when <strong>The Jesus And Mary Chain<\/strong>\u00a0jumped ship for <strong>Warner Brothers<\/strong> in 1985.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But, Chadwick says, McGee failed to provide the buffer The House of Love needed to rescue them from the demands of the record company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIt was a hell of a circus, the whole thing, and having Alan McGee as the manager wasn\u2019t a great idea,\u201d Chadwick admits.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cHe did his best and he gave us the best advice he could, but ultimately, his interests were Creation and himself. He really left us to it as far as dealing with Phonogram was concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Pressure began to build during sessions for the band\u2019s second album, driving a wedge between Chadwick and his lead guitarist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cHe became very introverted and distanced himself from me,\u201d Chadwick says of Bickers. \u201cHe was also very unhappy about me and my behaviour. I was being a bit of a prima donna to say the least. I was being pretty stupid. And that annoyed him and it kind of festered.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30168\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30168\" style=\"width: 765px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"30168\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/2017\/09\/daze-run-away-frontman-guy-chadwick-gives-the-inside-story-on-the-house-of-love-ahead-of-their-headlining-show-at-indie-daze-4\/levitation_studio__6_1337598389_crop_550x369\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Levitation_studio__6_1337598389_crop_550x369.jpg?fit=550%2C369&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"550,369\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Levitation_studio__6_1337598389_crop_550x369\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Levitation_studio__6_1337598389_crop_550x369.jpg?fit=550%2C369&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"wp-image-30168\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Levitation_studio__6_1337598389_crop_550x369.jpg?resize=640%2C429&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"429\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Introverted \u00a0and distant &#8211; Chadwick say Bickers isolated himself from the band<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Despite the pair\u2019s polarising relationship, the group managed to complete the album, though Chadwick confesses the long hours in the studio led to them \u201closing sight of what the band was really about\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cSuccess didn\u2019t solidify us and improve us \u2013 it had an adverse effect,\u201d he says now. \u201cAnd when that happens, everybody knows about it, but it\u2019s below the surface and there\u2019s no talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The simmering tensions boiled over in dramatic fashion, when the band were sent out on a \u201cnever-ending\u201d 60-date tour in support of the album.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAlmost every other night there would be a massive argument \u2013 the smallest thing and it would just blow up,\u201d Chadwick says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">With emotions reaching fever pitch, the singer exploded, \u00a0demolishing a much-loved guitar at a soundcheck.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIt was absolutely my favourite guitar and I just hammered it into the floor and broke it to pieces. I was heartbroken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But much worse was to follow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On the way back from another show, Bickers began setting light to a \u00a320 note in the tour van while chanting \u201cbreadhead\u201d at a furious Chadwick.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It was the last straw and the guitarist was sacked on the spot, left at Bristol Temple Meads station after reportedly being punched by drummer Pete Evans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWhen we literally just kicked him out of the van and drove off, it was just a fantastic relief,\u201d Chadwick explains, \u201cAnd for a couple of weeks it was fine and then it dawned on me that it wasn\u2019t a very good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Two or three months later Chadwick attempted to build bridges, but by then Bickers was putting together psych-rock outfit <strong>Levitation <\/strong>and in no mood for a reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Chadwick admits that he failed to recognise that his exhausted bandmate was in the throes of a serious breakdown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cIt was all so claustrophobic that I couldn\u2019t see the wood for the trees and I didn\u2019t sympathise with the way he felt at all,\u201d he confesses. \u201cI didn\u2019t empathise, I just saw it from my own point of view. I just thought he was being difficult and he wasn\u2019t, he was just not in a good place. And I wasn\u2019t helping him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAt the end of the day, we weren\u2019t like best friends. We\u2019ve always had this amazing connection with music, but we didn\u2019t start playing together because we liked each other, we started the band because we liked playing music together. There wasn\u2019t this huge close bond, and I regret that. I was selfish and should\u2019ve just been a bit more aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"30169\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/2017\/09\/daze-run-away-frontman-guy-chadwick-gives-the-inside-story-on-the-house-of-love-ahead-of-their-headlining-show-at-indie-daze-4\/the_house_of_love_christine-288773\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/THE_HOUSE_OF_LOVE_CHRISTINE-288773.jpg?fit=470%2C499&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"470,499\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"THE_HOUSE_OF_LOVE_CHRISTINE-288773\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/THE_HOUSE_OF_LOVE_CHRISTINE-288773.jpg?fit=470%2C499&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-30169\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/essentiallypop.com\/epop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/THE_HOUSE_OF_LOVE_CHRISTINE-288773.jpg?resize=640%2C680&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The group had coped with the departure of a member before, when Andrea Heukamp returned to her native Germany soon after the recording of <em>Christine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">But losing the man whose mastery of effects had helped create the band\u2019s unique sound was a different proposition altogether.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Chadwick would soldier on with other guitarists and various line-ups, but things were never quite the same again and the group finally ground to a halt in 1993.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Alan McGee has said the febrile atmosphere and the band&#8217;s eventual implosion were due to drug use, but Chadwick says this is overstated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI think the drugs were just a symptom of how we felt. There was no massive drug-taking. We were not doing shit loads of coke, no-one was doing smack. We were doing Es and smoking lots of dope. My problem, more than anything else was just drinking too much.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cTerry is someone who can\u2019t and should never take drugs and to be honest it\u2019s the same with me. They just did not agree with me at all. Smoking dope habitually \u2013 I just used to go psychotic and so did he \u2013 so it was crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While he\u2019s refreshingly honest about his own culpability, particularly where Bickers is concerned, Chadwick blames Fontana for the band&#8217;s demise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cOne of my favourite songs is <strong><em>The Girl With The Loneliest Eyes<\/em><\/strong> and that was like the turning point for us, because it all went wrong after that and badly. I think that was completely the fault of the record company because they put it out and it wasn\u2019t stocked by HMV and Our Price &#8211; those companies at the time controlled 80% of the chart return shops \u2013 so we didn\u2019t get a chart placing,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe&#8217;d sold enough records in the first week to have had a top five single. It was the first release that we\u2019d had for 15 months and it completely killed the third album. I don\u2019t know what happened. I was on medication. I just completely cracked up and couldn\u2019t get any focus,\u201d he says, praising his wife for her tremendous help and patience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It was only after deciding to give up music in 2000 that he slowly began to recover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cAfter about a year of just sitting around I got a driving job with a fashion PR company. It was absolutely horrible, but it got me out of the house for six months and I was able to start thinking straight again. It took a good two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Having now been together for longer than the first incarnation lasted, the re-booted House of Love have released two albums,\u00a0<strong><em>Days Run Away<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>She Paints Words In Red,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and there\u2019s a third one on the way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Fiercely self-critical Chadwick asserts that the last album \u201cjust wasn\u2019t good enough\u201d and the new one will not be released until the band are fully satisfied with the recording.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Chadwick says the band are excited about the prospect of headlining Indie Daze 4, topping a bill which features <strong>The Wonderstuff<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Miles Hunt<\/strong>\u00a0&amp; <strong>Erica Nockalls<\/strong>, <strong>Voice of the Beehive<\/strong>, <strong>Crazyhead<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Thousand Yard Stare<\/strong>,\u00a0<b>Apollo 440<\/b>,\u00a0<strong>Bis<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Salad<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cYou bump into people you literally haven\u2019t seen for years and years. We did a couple of these gigs last year with The Wonderstuff and they work well. They\u2019re retro gigs but there\u2019s a good crowd,\u201d says Chadwick.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">A calmer, happier quartet these days, Chadwick insists The House of Love remain as passionate as ever about the music, promising a set packed full of fan favourites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cWe\u2019re very focused, we get on really well, no-one\u2019s afraid of speaking their mind, but there are no massive arguments,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a good outfit. We take it pretty seriously. And we take live performance extremely seriously. Everyone gives their all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While colossal fame may have eluded him, Chadwick is justifiably proud of his band\u2019s achievements and back catalogue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cI feel very lucky that we have a body of songs that we can play as a set and a lot of people enjoy it, key songs for us like <em>Shine On<\/em>, <em>The Beatles and the Stones<\/em> and <em>I Don\u2019t Know Why I Love You<\/em>, which was big for us in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">While he may have been bruised by his treatment at Fontana, he\u2019s remarkably sanguine about his life in the music business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIn retrospect, you have your opportunities and you either use them or you don\u2019t, so I don\u2019t feel in any way hard done by,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Indie Daze 4 takes place at the O2 Kentish Town Forum on October 7.
