The Primitives<\/strong> are back with their first new music since 2014 album\u00a0Spin-O-Rama<\/strong><\/em>.<\/h4>\n

Now signed to Madrid-based\u00a0Elefant Records<\/strong>, the band have been riding a wave of nostalgia since their 2009 reunion.<\/h4>\n

Released ahead of\u00a0upcoming UK live dates, New Thrills\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is a four-track EP, which\u00a0is packaged in\u00a0an appropriately retro 10” vinyl maxi-single format.<\/p>\n

Lead track\u00a0I’ll Trust The Wind\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>(see video below), bears all the typical Primitives hallmarks, merging ’60s girl group bubblegum pop, with darker influences like The Velvet Underground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Opening with a burst of chiming guitars, and with a melody not unlike\u00a0The Fall<\/strong>‘s\u00a0C.R.E.E.P<\/strong><\/em>, it’s the sound of a band revitalised.<\/p>\n

Track Two\u00a0Squeak ‘n’ Squawk<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0shows the band’s gift for a barbed lyric as\u00a0Tracy Tracy<\/strong>\u00a0slaps down an annoying bigmouth:\u00a0\u201cI wish that I could find the time to give less time to you”.<\/em><\/p>\n

Flip over to the B-side and\u00a0Oh Honey Sweet<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0sees guitarist\u00a0Paul Court <\/strong>taking on\u00a0lead vocal duties for a sweetly crooned love song.<\/p>\n

It’s a neat change of pace, highlighted by Tracy’s harmonies and\u00a0the same jangly Byrds<\/strong>-like guitars that had the likes of Morrissey<\/strong> swooning in their ’80s heyday.<\/p>\n

The final offering\u00a0Same Stuff<\/strong><\/em> is perhaps the most interesting of the lot.<\/p>\n

Opening with an almost Japanese-influenced guitar sound, the song morphs into a psych-tinged, surf anthem, accented by artful\u00a0time changes.<\/p>\n

In an interview<\/strong><\/a> with EP<\/strong> last year, Court indicated that The Primitives would not be releasing any more albums.<\/p>\n

But could they be persuaded otherwise? Certainly\u00a0New Thrills\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>shows they’ve still got plenty of fresh ideas\u00a0in the locker.<\/p>\n
