Spanning 30 years of recording,\u00a0Lovely Creatures<\/em><\/strong> is a collection of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds<\/strong> music from their 1984 debut From Her To Eternity <\/em><\/strong>to 2013’s 15th<\/sup> studio album Push The Sky Away<\/em><\/strong>.<\/h4>\n

Compiled by Cave and longtime Bad Seeds cohort Mick Harvey<\/strong>, <\/strong>the album\u00a0was scheduled for release\u00a0in Autumn 2015, but shelved\u00a0following the death of Cave\u2019s 15-year-old son Arthur in July of that year.<\/h4>\n

As Cave notes in his afterword to the album,\u00a0Lovely Creatures <\/em>\u201clost, for a time, it\u2019s place in the narrative\u201d as he and the band struggled to come to terms with\u00a0Arthur\u2019s loss while working on\u00a0the \u201cstrange, raw and different present\u201d that was last year’s\u00a0Skeleton Tree<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now released to coincide with a world tour, the album is available in a wide variety of formats, including double CD, triple vinyl (both 21 tracks) and a 45-track deluxe triple CD, which includes a book and DVD.<\/p>\n

Cave completists will be tempted by the Super Deluxe limited edition package, which includes the three CDs, plus a two-hour DVD – featuring rare and unseen footage – along with a hardcover book containing original essays, together with personal photos taken by the band, family and friends.<\/p>\n

To an extent, any critical appraisal of a \u201cBest Of\u2026.\u201d album by an artist of Cave\u2019s stature is going to be somewhat superfluous \u2013 obviously it\u2019s going to be brilliant.<\/p>\n

The major bone of contention will be omissions and inclusions and whether this is a\u00a0faithful retrospective\u00a0and useful\u00a0introduction to The Bad Seeds\u2019 output over that period.<\/p>\n

So what do we\u00a0get\u2026.<\/p>\n

Well some songs, as Cave concedes \u201care just too big and have too much history to leave out\u201d.<\/p>\n

In this hallowed category you\u2019ll find live stalwarts Stagger Lee<\/em><\/strong> and The Mercy Seat,<\/em><\/strong> along with the much-loved Cave-Blixa Bargeld <\/strong>duet The Weeping Song <\/em><\/strong>and hit Kylie <\/strong>collaboration Where The Wild Roses Grow<\/em><\/strong> from the Murder Ballads<\/em><\/strong> album.<\/p>\n

The rampaging, audacious Deanna<\/em><\/strong>, Loverman<\/em><\/strong>, and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!<\/em><\/strong> all demand admittance, along with the moving People Ain\u2019t No Good, Straight To You <\/em><\/strong>and Into My Arms<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The brooding atmospheric Red Right Hand <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 practically a character in itself on TV drama Peaky Blinders<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 is another likely to have been first on the team sheet.<\/p>\n

O Children<\/em><\/strong> from the\u00a0Abattoir Blues \/ The Lyre Of Orpheus\u00a0<\/b>album\u00a0also gets the nod, having featured on the\u00a0Harry Potter<\/em> Deathly Hallows<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 – Part 1\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>soundtrack<\/p>\n

You get what you pay for, of course, and those who can stretch to it would be well advised to opt for the triple CD version, a far more comprehensive anthology, which yields\u00a0such delights as Do You Love Me?, Brompton Oratory <\/em><\/strong>and the menacing theatre of The Carny <\/em><\/strong>and Tupelo<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As befits a band constantly moving forward, there’s plenty of room for newer material on all formats.<\/p>\n

Jubilee Street,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0We No Who U R <\/strong><\/em>and\u00a0Higgs Boson Blues<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0<\/strong>on the double CD and vinyl, while\u00a0Jesus Of The Moon <\/strong><\/em>and\u00a0Night Of The Lotus Eaters\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>are among the extra tracks on the deluxe editions.<\/p>\n

So what of the omissions? Well there\u2019s nothing here from the 1987 album of cover versions Kicking Against The Pricks<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Renditions of the Velvets\u2019 All Tomorrow\u2019s Parties<\/em><\/strong>, or Running Scared<\/em><\/strong> by Roy Orbison<\/strong> – might have given new fans a useful insight into the band\u2019s influences and development.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no space either for Henry Lee<\/strong><\/em>, featuring PJ Harvey,<\/strong> or West Country Girl – <\/em><\/strong>the song Cave wrote for her.<\/p>\n

A blast of Janglin\u2019 Jack<\/em><\/strong> would not have gone amiss and many would have argued for the inclusion of Lime Tree Arbour <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 one of Cave\u2019s most affecting ballads.<\/p>\n

But you can\u2019t have everything and as a testament to the extraordinary first three decades\u00a0of one of alternative rock\u2019s most consistent and enduring bands Lovely Creatures<\/em><\/strong> will do just fine.<\/p>\n

As Cave says in his afterword: \u201c<\/em>There are those that didn’t make it, poor things. They are the ones you must discover by yourselves<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n
