What better antidote to the rapacious commercialism of Black Friday than a night out in Brixton with Savages?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The O2 Academy show was the band\u2019s biggest UK headlining performance to date and the packed house signalled that this was a band ready for the big leagues.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Walking on to Leonard Cohen<\/strong>\u2019s A Thousand Kisses Deep<\/em><\/strong> was a nice touch \u2013 a fitting tribute to the great man who passed away on November 7.<\/p>\n

But then it was straight down to business as Savages formally announced themselves by ripping into I Am Here<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s only when you see them live that you realise how important the rhythm section of bassist Ay\u015fe Hassan<\/strong>\u00a0and drummer Fay Milton<\/strong> are to Savages sound.<\/p>\n

These two don\u2019t just keep time – they are the beating heart of the band; Milton\u2019s pulsating rhythms the very definition of power and control, while Hassan\u2019s bass growl got\u00a0the ground rumbling beneath our feet.<\/p>\n

Songs came and went at ferocious pace, \u201cangry song\u201d Shut Up <\/em><\/strong>was a blistering delight, while I Need Something New<\/em><\/strong> was particularly moving.<\/p>\n

T.I.W.Y.G<\/em><\/strong> sounded even better than it does on record, while The Answer<\/em><\/strong> – for me the best song they\u2019ve written to date \u2013 was a thing of towering beauty.<\/p>\n

Milton and Hassan left the stage for a short time, \u00a0leaving singer Jehnny Beth<\/strong> and guitarist Gemma Thompson<\/strong> to perform a wry cover of Marianne Faithfull<\/strong>\u2019s, filthy, splenetic Why\u2019d Ya Do It?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHave you ever been cheated on? Perhaps you don\u2019t know yet?\u201d Jehnny Beth teased in her introduction to the song.<\/p>\n

While as frontwoman, Jehnny Beth rightly gets most of the attention, Thompson is the band\u2019s sonic architect.<\/p>\n

A stylish but unshowy guitarist, she’s equally\u00a0at home grinding out Stooges<\/strong>-style power riffs, as mixing her palette of effects to create more otherworldly, industrial or ethereal sounds.<\/p>\n

Jehnny Beth is a warmer personality than you might expect from the records, forging a real connection with her audience, urging us at one point to step forward \u201cbecause we like to see your faces\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not alone!\u201d she assured us later.<\/p>\n

As if to reinforce the theme of Inclusivity, support act Good Sad Happy Bad<\/strong>\u00a0were invited on stage halfway through the explosive finale of underdog anthem Fuckers<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As the song built to an ear-splitting climax, Jehnny Beth launched herself into the crowd, throwing messianic shapes as she was carried aloft by a sea of arms.<\/p>\n

People were still singing \u201cdon\u2019t let the fuckers get you down,\u201d long after the house lights went up and it was time to wend our way home.<\/p>\n

Savages are by some distance the most exciting live act around\u00a0right now.<\/p>\n
