I often talk about bands using their vocals as a musical instrument; there is no better description for what Colorado trio No Signal have created in their new track, ‘Embers’. ‘Embers’ is the second release from No Signal’s upcoming sophomore album, set for release late next year. ‘Jane’ was released in September.
You’d never know it from their sound, but No Signal are still very young – frontman Riley Schmelzer is 19. Their talent, however, is plain for all to see (and hear), and this is paying off dividends for the band. Drummer Nic Kubes, slightly older than Schmelzer at 21, may be known to fans of HBO’s ‘Euphoria’. The three are rounded out by bassist Jake de Marco. All three sound like they could hold it with the best of them – and if this is what they’re like now, then I’m really looking forward to what they come up with in 10, 20 years time.
Schmelzer’s vocals sound like they’re in slow motion, and, to me at least, they can almost be seen. When I close my eyes, I recall the footage from a few years back of cars driving through wildfires – interestingly the cover art for ‘Embers’ is a photo Schmelzer himself took of the Colorado wildfires. The sound may be the result of pitching the vocals down, or it might be Schmelzer’s actual voice (listening to ‘Jane’ I suspect the former) but it’s an incredible effect and works well.
