Meet Alannah McCready, Singer/Songwriter/Dream-chaser

Alannah McCready is an artist that eats, sleeps, and breaths drive. From as early as 10 years old, living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she displayed a formidable can-do attitude and a thirst to live the hell out of her life. At 10 years old, when Alannah wasn’t stopping pucks as the goalie of her hockey team, she was putting on concerts for her family, friends, and (according to her website) entertaining guests at local weddings singing to them in the bathrooms. Throughout high school, Alannah continued to follow her dreams playing in net for her high school hockey team and simultaneously finishing her studies, while also singing in the school choir. She would even sing the national anthem at her hockey games, in full gear, and then head back to the net to start the game. Now if that’s not commitment to following your passion, I don’t know what is, and if there is one thing that flows through Alannah’s latest single, ‘Can I Call’, it’s passion.

“‘Can I Call’ is a song about a long-distance relationship. The track describes the feeling of not knowing the next time you will see your loved one and how difficult that separation can be. The song also explores the idea that even when your significant other is far away, if you know that you can call them at any time, day or night, that will bring you comfort, and you will be able to get through more than you think.” – Alannah McCready

The choice to make this song a duet was a brilliant one, highlighting the emotional life of the story McCready, and her song writing partners Will Gittens and Sterling “David” Gittens Jr., created. Alannah’s vocals are beautifully resonant in this track, providing a depth and slight rasp that draws the listener in and highlights one of the character’s perspectives on the relationship in question. Alannah’s verse talks about the struggle of not being able to be with the one you love and feeling those pangs of longing that come with long distance.

Will Gittens provides his vocals, clear and slightly lighter sounding in comparison to Alannah’s, in verse 2. His vocals deliver a nice counterpoint to Alannah’s in both sound quality and the emotional journey the song takes you on as a listener. The other character, voiced by Will, describes knowing that there is distance between himself and the person he loves and sees that distance not only as a necessary step in becoming the people they want to be, but also as a testament to their love and journey together.

Chasing a dream
That no one else could see
But girl I know you see it

I won’t hesitate
And if I get a chance to take someone
You know you’re coming with me

The song highlights both sides of a long-distance relationship well and plays off of the dichotomy that Alannah described in her quote above. Yes, long distance can be hard, and it can test your love and your emotional strength. However, there is an underlying faith that is required in these situations and the two characters find a way to make the hard times a little easier by making time for each other, no matter where they are in the world. Don’t take my word for it though, take a listen to Alannah McCready’s latest single and see what stands out for you.
