$tovey – ‘Pronto’

It’s a place you’ve probably never heard of. Pittsburg, California, is East of San Francisco and Oakland, beyond Mount Diablo, right on the San Joaquin River. It’s still very much a part of the Bay Area, but it’s different enough from the rest of Northern California to have established a personality all of its very own. A straightforward and unpretentious place, deeply and proudly Californian, Pittsburg is working-class, multi-ethnic, visually striking, and creative without being over the top. It’s $tovey’s hometown, and he hopes to put Pittsburg on the world stage.

$tovey’s music is ferocious, and forceful, stylish but never showy, confident, smart, and tough. $tovey’s singles are packed with quick-witted rhymes, filled with wordplay and cultural references along with plenty of distinctive personality. His latest release, ‘Pronto’, is not just $tovey’s most fully realized track yet, it’s also his most impressive. The track sees him begin rhyming almost right from the start, and he keeps it going for two minutes flat. There’s no breaks, no features, and no fear. He’s coming out fast and strong – pronto.

$tovey’s producers have ensured his sound is in keeping with his sensibility. There’s a hint of pop, but it’s never sugar sweet; there’s also trap sensibilities while plenty of room has been left for $tovey to show off his stuff. ‘Pronto’ is eminently danceable, and it’s also shoutable – there’s just enough aggression to get the crowd moving and the party started. The music video features $tovey and his crew strutting their stuff, against a background of their Pittsburg neighbourhood. They’re no nonsense, they’re tough, and they command authority.
