Released yesterday September 3, ‘Auto-Tune My Love’ is the latest single from Jon Patrick Walker, a name that will be readily familiar to regular readers of Essentially Pop. The track comes ahead of his self-released new album, ‘The Rented Tuxedo & Other Songs’, which is due to drop on October 8. The song also comes with a fun music video, featuring the cutest dog you’ll see all day. There’s also a great outtake at the end.
Jon Patrick Walker played King George in the national tour of ‘Hamilton’, and outside of Broadway he’s also appeared on TV and in films. Like everyone else, he’s also been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, but even before that he’d increasingly been turning his creative juices to songwriting, and music making. His debut album, ‘The Guilty Party’, was released back in 2013, and the follow up ‘People Going Somewhere’ came out in 2016. His six song EP, ‘You And I’ dropped in 2018 to rave reviews, and the one we’re probably the one we’re most familiar with, ‘Welcome To The Edge Times’, was was released in October last year.
The new, upcoming, ‘The Rented Tuxedo & Other Songs’, comprises nine original tunes, which will remind the listener of the likes of David Bowie, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen. Nonetheless, it’s all clearly Jon Patrick’s work; the bulk of which was recorded in Nashville under the watch of producer Roger Moutenot, while the title-track was recorded at the legendary Sun Studios, Memphis, and the final track, ‘All-Night Diner’, was recorded during the sessions for ‘People Going Somewhere’, at Bushwick.
Latest single, ‘Auto-Tune My Love’ is an up-tempo track, a full on bop of a song. It’s got folk sensibilities, with locomotive paced percussions (close your eyes and you can hear the train’s wheels turning courtesy of brushed drumming), along with steel guitar, and JP doing his very best Dylan-slash-Tom Petty vocals. The video however gives the song a whole other vibe: shot in and around Los Angeles by Sebastian Heinrich, and directed by Bob Cucuzza, we see JP and his dog, living in a car. They’re spying on some people playing beach volleyball, but in turn they’re being spied on themselves. Not long after they decide it’s time to go “play a while”, and so, dressed in an olden days striped swimming costume, JP and his doggo are soon having fun in the sun (well…the doggie is choosing to instead hang out under the shade of an umbrella. All in all, it’s a fun clip that adds an extra dimension to the song.
