Last Giant – ‘Idiology’ (live)

Based in Portland, Oregon, rock band Last Giant may well not be the last super tall being on earth, but that’s not to say their time, status, history, continuity – and strength – aren’t gigantic. Their stance on social justice is also pretty huge as well, and their latest single, ‘Idiology’, doesn’t mince words. A song about misgovernment, and the need to break through the web of lies that threatens to suffocate the freedom of public discourse in the USA, it’s following in the giant footsteps of the rock music tradition of protest.

Frontman Ryan Heise makes the authorities aware in no uncertain terms that he’s onto their game, and he won’t be silenced. From the thirty minute concert film, ‘Live From The Hallowed Halls’, ‘Idiology’ is just one of many topical songs in Last Giant’s set list. Pointed lyrics from Heise, powerful drums from Matt Wiles, and a bass as loud as thunder from Palmer Cloud, they’re captured on film by Brian Nelson, who shows the four talented musicians in a beautiful studio, arranged in a circle, with each member paying close attention to what his bandmates are doing, and responding with both creativity and pure force.

‘Idiology (Live)’ sees Last Giant captured at their intense best, and Heise delivers his words of defiance with conviction and persuasion. Even though it’s an extract from from ‘Hallowed Halls’, it is certainly well able to stand on its own in testimony to the power of rock and that power as a force for good.
