Los Musick and P.A.T. Louisiana’s Finest – ‘My Friend Hip Hop’

Although Los Musick and P.A.T. grew up in Port Arthur, Texas and Opelousas, Louisiana respectively, their new single, ‘My Friend Hip Hop’ feels like the pair grew up in the same street. There’s an easygoing back-and-forth between them, while their complementary flows show the duo are true students of the golden age of Hip Hop. Collaborating on the two-part album, ‘Inside The People’ last year, they managed to complete it remotely, taking only a staggering two weeks. There’s enough in the track to remind the listener of iconic duos such as Port Arthur’s UGK or Outkast, with the two challenging, and rewarding, their listeners with every word and verse. Coming straight from the soul, their conscious, observational poetry is a mix of street-level grit and chart-worthy hooks, which serves as a brilliant introduction to a duo you’ve definitely not heard the last of.

‘My Friend Hip Hop’ is the opening track on ‘Inside The People’, and could very well be considered as having “instant classic” status. The chorus, “Hip Hop is my friend, picks me up when I am down,” is positivity incarnate; it’s a simple, honest shout-out to the art form that has been a source of strength to millions. With Los Musick providing the the sonic backdrop, bass beats, synth loops and all, P.A.T. Louisiana’s Finest’s style is a perfect match – they are two lyrical masters joining forces, each bringing their own personal style and flow.

For the clip to ‘My Friend Hip Hop’, director J-Dubb took the opportunity to embrace and celebrate more than just Hip Hop culture. We see Los Musick and P.A.T. Louisiana’s Finest on the streets of Beaumont, TX, the very same back alleys Los Musick knew so well from childhood. Also featured in the video are international dance crew UMANG_dancers, as well as a group of skaters perfecting their tricks. All are welcome in Los Musick and P.A.T.’s world, and true artists recognize other artists, no matter the medium. Additionally, the video is interspersed with protest footage from yesteryear and earlier this year. It’s a celebration and commemoration of community.
