Lost Romance – ‘Heart On A Wire’

Gerry Perlinski, of Lost Romance, is a veteran of the New Jersey independent scene, and he knows that a lot of the best music of that US state – and the rest of the country – comes from underground, and has been the staple of that scene for decades. By underground, we of course mean the likes of basement parties in New Brunswick, or pop up ground floor warehouse events in Newark, or garden apartment art galleries, in Hudson County. Lost Romance play on this idea in the clip for their latest single, ‘Heart On A Wire’, with the makeshift stage and low ceiling, lit with a string of lights, and an audience made up of appreciative locals.

‘Heart On A Wire’ comes from Lost Romance’s most recent album, ‘Strum It Again’, which follows on from their EP, ‘The Light And The Dark’, which established the group as a player, not just in Jersey independent music, but also in that scene across the whole of the country. They’ve shared stages with the likes of King’s X, Rye Coalition, Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens, Elliott Easton of The Cars, among others, and have appeared at the annual Light of Day Festival in Asbury Park. They’ve also been nominated for several Hoboken Music Awards. On top of that, Lost Romance have earned praise from NJ.com, The Aquarian, The Jersey Journal, NJ Underground, and other press both online and off. They’re a proud product of the Garden State, and their state loves them back in return.

In the video for ‘Heart On A Wire’, director Josh Stoddard, who’s made clips for Fountains of Wayne, among others, plays on the idea that it’s quite natural for an indie rocker to have a basement full of equipment and a performance area – it’s not presented as a surprise, but more like a homecoming. We follow Perlinski as he makes his way from a local basketball court, down the streets, and into the basement, through the eager throng, where he slips the guitar strap over his neck. Bassist Dan Haag and drummer David Harman are already playing and the song the exact type you’d expect to hear in a basement – delivered with total conviction and filled with sincerity and grit – absolutely no pretentiousness to be found.
