The Dead Daisies – ’30 Days In The Hole’

The Dead Daisies are seemingly unstoppable, with the kings of hard rock bringing stadium audiences to their feet in their tours with fellow rock gods KISS, and many others. Comprising a who’s who of heavy rock, the collective currently comprises Doug Aldrich of Whitesnake, and Dio; Deen Castronovo, drummer with Bad English, and Journey; Deep Purple’s bassist and singer, Glenn Hughes; and founder David Lowy, rhythm guitarist with Red Phoenix. The group has released five albums in their time, and latest single, ’30 Days In The Hole’, an acoustic re-imagining of the Humble Pie classic, sees them apply a bluesy, slow burn to the track, in a way that only rock veterans of the real deal can pull off.

In the hands of The Dead Daisies, ’30 Days In The Hole’ is not a mere cover, or a tribute, but rather the band gives the song a whole other life of its own, a new beginning. Aldrich’s guitar is filled with emotion, thundering with a satisfying foreboding, wrenching every melody from his guitar with a turbulence that underlies the seeming serenity. Glenn Hughes meanwhile displays both strength and vulnerability with his vocals, while at the same time pulling them in with a masterful restraint. Although the lyrics are harrowing, and demand to be given a hard rock treatment, Hughes and Aldrich are evenly matched as they keep full control of the song.

In these times of Covid-19 we are seeing more and more unique takes on videos, and ’30 Days In The Hole’ is no different, with the members of the band shooting their parts separately, on their phones. The loneliness and isolation that’s so prevalent in the song itself works perfectly in the socially distanced video. Hughes and Aldrich bring in stellar performances, captured in stylised and grainy footage, with low-lighting and closeups, while a single solitary raven unites them, a dark symbol of death, haunting the clip with its very presence. Be entranced by ’30 Days In The Hole’ below, and follow the further adventures of The Dead Daisies on their official website.
