Ready, Steady, Die! – ‘Deep’

Although Morgan Visconti is the son of super producer Tony Visconti, his band, Ready, Steady, Die!, which includes British singer songwriter Sam K bears little resemblance to the music the elder Visconti had a hand in. Bending dream pop, electronic rock, and darkwave, the duo’s first album ‘Pleasure Ride’ was the initial instalment in their upcoming trilogy, and latest single, ‘Deep’, is a slow-burning trip across whispered verses and haunting choruses.

Sam K sings like a woman possessed, reminiscent of Siobhan Fahey, or Kate Bush. Breathy and ethereal, we feel her vocals creeping up along the hairs on the back of our neck, and it’s perfectly point-set against Visconti’s sinister electronica. The song opens up like a distant train echoing along the tracks, and then becomes a fast beating heart, threatening to burst out of its ribcage. Unsettlingly sweet, Sam K’s vocals are both compel and repulse in equal measures; that’s not to say that they’re not gorgeous, but rather we feel threatened by them, and are more than a little scared.

The accompanying video does nothing to allay this fear, and, with Visconti using his directorial moniker WeekendClass, we are taken into dark mysterious woods, where unspeakable things might occur. Thankfully the woods aren’t a real place: using 3D photo scans, and infinite zooms into trees and bark, as well as CGI footage of swarms of insects, cascades of blood, and tendrils clawing their way into every possible crevice. As creepy as it is, it’s altogether beautiful – wonderful even – with a sort of peacefulness in all its horror. You can watch the video below. Let us know what you think.
