Rachel Eckroth ft. Sy Smith – ‘Perfect Love’

The queen of underground soul, producer and songwriter Rachel Eckroth makes the perfect collaboration with vocalist Sy Smith on the song ‘Perfect Love’, with the track becoming the showcase of the talents of both artists.

Fans of Eckroth and Smith won’t at all be surprised at the resulting piece; Rachel has been working for years supporting a varied range of artists including Botti, KT Tunstall, Donny McCaslin, and Rufus Wainwright, among others, and playing synths in the house band on the Meredith Vieira Show. Her debut solo album, ‘When It Falls’, was released in 2018, the same year Sy released  the sparkling album, ‘Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete’. Each artist blurs – nay, erases – the boundaries between jazz, soul, pop, and experimental music, with the end result leaving you wondering if there was ever such a division in the first place.

The pair first met while touring with jazz trumpeter Chris Botti, and have since made guest appearances on each other’s stage, as well as featuring on each other’s music. But ‘Perfect Love’, a deep and full track – very sexy, and quite grown up to say the least – will stand out as the highlight of their joint endeavours. Opening on a wave of synths and muffled drums, Sy then flows in with her voice. The music intensifies, and surrounds the listener with sound, carrying them heavenward in bliss.

The video is no less sexy. With Sy Smith the focus of director Tatch Taboada’s psych clip, we see her dancing through all the gorgeously coloured landscapes, digitally created, refracted, and blurred. Sy is always smiling, her allure captivating. Taboada has taken the song and crafted a perfect visual representation.
