Australian artist Pronounced Laila E takes her inspiration from the issues faced by the homeless and sex workers, in her new single, ‘Grey Street’. The song features the cries of a woman she met on Grey Street, in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, where she is currently based.
Performed accompanied only by a simple guitar melody, before giving way to a strident rap, Pronounced Laila E gives a voice to the voiceless with her hard hitting and emotive lyrics, while putting herself in the position of those whose stories would otherwise not be told.
Pronounced Laila E first started to use music and write lyrics ten years ago as a tool to overcome past trauma. Her rhymes focus on issues such as homelessness, and draw on her personal experiences with mental illness and awareness. Speaking of her music, Pronounced Laila E says,
“I wish to be a voice to those who need to be heard and those who need to heal.”
The artist cites her inspirations as being The Beastie Boys, and Faithless, and as result her music has a diverse quality to it.
Although all live shows are currently postponed, Pronounced Laila E will be performing a live show on NSB Radio, the date of which is yet to be confirmed.
