Right from the start, ‘Sunrise’ is a banger. It starts out at a frenetic pace, and keeps it up right through to the end. It’s rock and roll in the truest sense of the word, soul and swing and Brandon Phillips and The Condition do their thing. All that could make it better is the movie-like music video to accompany the track.
In the words of Brandon Phillips himself, ‘Sunrise’ is about,
“being in a place of self-love and reflecting on the journey that got you there – a place where the sun rises and sets on love and happiness instead of your boss and your bank account.”
That’s what the video gets across too, set in the 60s, it’s a proper period piece, with dark humour, some criminal activity, and a whole lot of loving. And when we say video, we really mean movie – the whole thing has a storyline from start to finish, and isn’t just a promotional piece for the song. Directed by Todd Norris and Mitch Brian, ‘Sunrise’ tells the tale of two dudes who decide to hold up the bank they work at. Their boss is a complete stereotype – cigar-chomping and all – who pushes them so far over the edge that they embark on a full on acid trip – and setting fire to all the loot from their heist along the way.
