It really feels like we’ve been in quarantine forever due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we’ve had to adjust to separation and distance, everywhere in the world. Musical artists are no different, but they have a further struggle in that their very livelihood is affected because they’re unable to perform live in public. But thankfully, musicians are very resourceful, and with that comes a lot of hope as well. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Dos Floris, is determined not to let enforced separation get to her, and instead has collaborated with other musicians, as well as members of the general public. Her new single, ‘All In It Together’, sees a 40 person band come together over a video link-up, comprising independent musicians she’s met over time, as well as the public.
‘All In It Together’ is a tribute to the medical professionals who have not just saved the lives of those affected by this insidious virus, but who have also made their own sacrifices in terms of family and friends. The message of the song, in terms that are quite poetic and yet straight to the point, is that no matter how little hope we’re feeling at the moment, no matter that we might be feeling like this situation will never end, we are all in this together and we will make it out the other side. All proceeds from the sale of the new single will go to assist UK musicians who have been affected by the current crisis.
Fans of Dos Floris and in particular her debut ‘The Widowed Earth’ and follow up singles, ‘Starlight’, and ‘On The Road’, will not be shocked at all to discover the incredibly emotional current running through ‘All In It Together’, and the song in a way serves as an extension of ‘The Widowed Earth’, while at the same time taking a different path. It continues on with the empathy and themes examined in Floris’s Floris’s debut, yet concurrently it presents in such a direct way that is rare in any artist.
Dos Floris makes it clear that she has an important message that she must share. The video opens with her alone with her guitar, performing to camera, then shows her playing piano. Soon the screen splits…repeating over and over. There’s a drummer from Manchester, a double bass player from Bristol, then she’s joined by singers of all ages, then musicians playing a variety of instruments, all in separate locations – but together as one. There’s also a touching scene of two medical professionals, dressed in PPE, joining in the singing.
