When you listen to ‘Hotel’, by A.T.L.D.V. you might find yourself thinking that you’ve gone back in time, that the track couldn’t possibly be a modern one; there’s a distinct 9os vibe to its RnB sound, with its seamless merging of hip hop rhythms and soulful vocals. But it’s a modern track indeed, and it’s captured the classic feel of the heyday of RnB, while at the same time feeling every bit a part of the now.
The silky smooth vocals and sweet sweet harmonies of A.T.L.D.V. come together in a way that only life-long friends can achieve. Despite being a group of individuals with distinct personalities, they nonetheless are almost able to read each other’s minds when it comes to knowing exactly how to play and sing to complement each other’s strengths. A.T.L.D.V. are a real band, and understand the stylistic roots of what they are playing. They are not just replicating the sound of OG RnB, they are making it. It’s the sound of now. They take it very seriously as well, even so much as their album, ‘#THEFUTUREOFRANDBBANDS’ serves as a manifesto for what they stand for.
The video for ‘Hotel’ doesn’t have the impressively accurate whole-group dance routines that fans of A.T.L.D.V. would be familiar with from their live performances. Nonetheless however, that sense of good fun that is present in their shows, still manages to manifest itself as we see the band performing in a boutique hotel, where style and sharp dressing are the order of the night. There are beautiful choreographed sequences, including one in front of a hung bed sheet, in the centre of a gorgeous guest room, inviting the participants to perhaps go with their desires.
The clip winds up with a late night card game, with all members of the group participating, providing a visual metaphor of the close kinship that the band possess, and that all real RnB bands share.
