Reverse Mechanic – ‘Run’

Rapper Reverse Mechanic first came to our attention a couple of weeks back, with ‘Head In The Clouds’, the first track from his album, ‘Best Proposal Ever’. Now he returns with new single, ‘Run’, along with a music video featuring him, well, running.

Previously we’ve called this a concept album, but it’s not really, because the whole LP is a real life narrative about how Reverse Mechanic – aka Minnesota-based Joe Wistrcill – pursues his lady love, Angela, in his quest for the best proposal ever. Although he’s more than a dab hand at playing a vast array of instruments, not to mention he knows his way around a beat, it’s lyrics where he truly shines, and a narrative such as in this album is mere putty in his hands.

Reverse Mechanic plays with words in a way which allows his flow to elicit positivity, albeit in a serious fashion. His influences are vast, and include up and comers such as Classified, but also more established artists as Chance The Rapper.

Reverse Mechanic’s curious moniker is a reference to his lyricism: he takes words and language apart, reassembling it in a fashion which strikes new chords, and resonates in a way which will surprise the listener.

The clip for ‘Run’ is part of what is essentially one entire unbroken music video for all eight songs on ‘Best Proposal Ever’, all of which were written by Joe before he eventually proposed to his lady love, Angela. In ‘Run’, we see our heroic couple still dating, and it is set during one of their shared adventures. Joe, and the as yet unsuspecting Angela are seen boating, hiking, and taking road trips, and in between we see Joe running through the city to something which he’s not allowed to be late for under any circumstances. He races through block after block, rhyming as though he’s reciting his wedding vows, clearly on a mission. The tension is palpable, and we can only imagine what Joe is going through.
