The music of lotusbliss, comprising brothers Seth, Josh, and Adam Gauton, from Canterbury, Kent, comes at you like a speeding train: unwavering, insistent, determinedly powerful. They grew up making music together, but formed as lotusbliss in 2018 while tossing around band names in a lighthearted conversation. Debut single, ‘Beautiful Monotone’, was released in November last year, while new single, ‘Carpet’, is the second and final release from their EP, ‘A Good Death Is A Beautiful Thing’.
Their pop-rock sound demonstrates their mastery of arrangement, and their innate sonic awareness, and understanding of its beauty. Produced by Josh Rumble, who himself is bassist and songwriter for London indie-pop band Anteros, ‘Carpet’ picks up where ‘Beautiful Monotone’ leaves off; like the afore-mentioned train, it’s accelerating out of the station and soon settles into a reverie of cool guitars, muffled (yet propulsive) drums, and pleasingly articulated synths. Like other bands made up of siblings, their harmonies are lush and radiant, merging together in an otherworldly synthesis.
The music video for ‘Carpet’ has been crafted in house, with Josh producing and directing. It’s haunting; the clip heightens the feeling of danger already present in the song itself. Moody and compelling, the clip tells the tale of a kidnapping, with slow motion footage, adeptly shot violence, and gloomy, ominous Kent countryside. We’re pulled into their eerie narrative, and soon realise there’s no easy way out.
