Looking back on relationships we tend to see things not as they really happened, but rather as a series of memories. We don’t necessarily remember the truth of it, but we try hard to work out how to do it better next time. Nashville-based artist, Kailey Nicole, knows how it goes, and with her song, ‘Change My Ways’, and its accompanying video, she takes us through all the stages of lost love and what we all go through.Â
A gifted storyteller, whose style leans towards the more traditional country sound, with a modern twist, Kailey Nicole is also an accomplished actress, who manages to dominate every shot in ‘Change My Ways’. The video appears to have been made in one continuous shot, but in fact, it’s been cleverly edited to look that way. Kailey brings a relationship to life, and we see its entire journey – from blissfully sweet beginnings, to the sad and painful end. The video is set in a typical Nashville bar, where Kailey meets a handsome stranger. Throughout the clip we see them fall in love, grow apart, and then he drifts away – all in under three minutes. Each booth in the bar is symbolic of a different stage of the relationship. There’s sometimes an overlap of booths, where we see two Kaileys at once – often at two distinct stages in the relationship. It’s gorgeously shot and beautifully framed, and the motion is constant, the camera revolving around the bar.
The six track set of her self-titled EP, from which ‘Change My Ways’ comes, has been produced by legendary Niles Thomas, and produced by Grammy winning engineer and masterer, Bonzai Caruso, who’s known for his work with the likes of Madonna, and Stephen Marley, among many many others.
