Heartour – ‘Let The Robots Drive’

Heartour is the recording name of Jason Young, who is known as the drummer of long-running LA band, The Ruse, who have also toured the world as support for Muse. His musical chops are undisputed, but it is with Heartour when he comes into his own, and his abilities as an artist and songwriter are showcased, centre stage.

‘R U IN’ is Heartour’s fifth and most recent album, and sees Young take on the help of mixer Tony Hoffer, who’s shaped the dreams of Beck, and Belle & Sebastian, among many others. ‘Let The Robots Drive’ is the follow up to lead single, ‘Brain’, and is a skilful blend of psych rock and powerful synth pop. The listener is completely consumed, and the track is compellingly danceable, not to mention eminently radio-ready and streamworthy. It’s also intensely memorable, and builds on both those innovations Young has already developed in his previous Heartour albums, but also makes use of that which he made with The Ruse.

Directed by Steffen Heil, the incredibly colourful animation for ‘Let The Robots Drive’ is a high spirited romp through rolling and shifing landscapes. There’s more than a hint of danger. Heil’s work has a distinct look. He makes good use of bold hues, and faces which are expressive while drawn with the fewest lines necessary. There is a sense of immediacy which is the perfect mate for the forthrightness of the song. We are taken to a place somewhere beyond anything we’ve ever imagined, and indeed, the robots do the driving.
