Should I Upgrade to MacOS Catalina?

Apple keeps on creating amazing operating systems for its devices. So much so that it can be hard to make the switch from a system that you’ve gotten used to.

However, even Apple themselves will admit that they aren’t flawless. It’s why they constantly strive to perfect them with new updates every so often.

In October of 2019, a new operating system (macOS Catalina) was introduced as the successor to Mac’s current Mojave format. Why should you care? Why should you make the switch?

You might be wondering “should I upgrade to macOS Catalina?” That’s up to you. But be sure to read this article for all the benefits that making the upgrade can offer you.

1. Sidecar

Who doesn’t love a little more wiggle room and extra desktop space? While that might not be possible to physically extend your Mac’s current screen, Catalina’s Sidecar feature offers a healthy solution.

Sidecar allows those of you that possess an iPad to use it as an extra desktop, hence the name.

It can also be used as a second-for-second reflection of your Mac, whatever your preferred use is. Best of all, it doesn’t require any extra set up for you to use. Just use AirPlay and all your wildest dreams will come true!

Those of you that are graphic designers will be especially excited about that feature. You can see your drawings come to life on the Mac desktop while using the convenience of your iPad!

2. Bye Bye iTunes

iTunes had a great run. However, like everything else in this world, all great things must come to an end.

At first, people tried to call Apple’s bluff when the killing off of iTunes was announced at the Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) last year. However, only months later, they made it a reality.

They replaced the “artist formerly known as iTunes” with new media applications in the form of Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts, respectively.

Why? Because it now allows for Apple to zero-in on each aspect of their media, rather than being limited to what iTunes has the audacity for.

This can only be good news for the consumer. It means that Apple will know focus on each area of entertainment individually. Delivering the top-notch quality that they’re known for to each form of media. It starts by updating to Catalina!

Of course, iTunes isn’t the only app that won’t work on your Mac with Catalina.

3. Improvements to Photos

A major feature of Apple has been and always will be the Photos app. Still, they continue to find new ways to improve your experience on it with each update.

With Catalina, Apple focused on providing more organization for your photos by sorting them by the date that they were taken.

Now you’ll have a better idea of where to find each picture that you’re looking for, rather than scrolling through thousands of old photos to find one specific picture.

This update is available on the iPhone as well as the Mac, and offers the same filing convenience on both. You can also customize how you’d like the photos to be stored.

4. Screen Time Application

Have you ever wondered how much time you’re spending on your Mac? Perhaps you’re more concerned about how much your children or spouse is on it?

Whatever your concern, Catalina has equipped you with the new Screen Time app. It lets you see insights into the screen time you and your family spend at the desktop.

You can see statistics on how much time is spent per hour, day, week, or month. Better yet, it allows you to set up limits on an app-to-app limit.

How can it get any better? This is how: Screen time can be used on any Apple device that you have.

You can finally control how much time your children spend on social media, phone games, Skype, or any other time-consuming event.

5. More Control Over Your Mail

Imagine the peace that would come from not hearing your email receive another piece of junk mail every ten seconds.

You can finally know what that feels like with the new email control options of the Catalina operating system.

It allows you to be as simple as muting your mail or as diligent and specific as blocking individual senders.

You can even stop the alerts for specific senders, while every other email will still alert you as it’s sent. You’ll finally be able to block that one co-worker that floods your inbox with GIFs every single hour.

6. Better Reminders

Long has the reminders application been heralded as one of the most useful tools on Apple devices.

Catalina has taken it one step further by offering more options for creating reminders when you need them most. In fact, if you forget to set an alarm that you normally do, the reminders app will help you remember to do so.

This helps you keep up to the task with every single activity that you have throughout your day, week, and month.
