People Years – ‘Recognizable Animal’

People Years are an amalgam of four dudes from Birmingham Alabama who’ve been in a lot of bands you’ve heard of, and some you’ve probably not.

Comprising Chris Rowell on vocals and guitar (who also writes and produces for them), who’s been in Warm In the Wake, Sea Fix, King Lear Jet, Tony Oliver behind his Keyboard fortress, who was in Sea Fix with Chris, Greg Slamen rocking that Bass, and coming from Cosmonaut on Vacation, Heath Green & The Makeshifters, Through The Sparks, and last but certainly not least, the infamous Wes McDonald on Drums, who as Terry Ohms we’ve featured here a few times, but he’s also been a part of Vulture Whale, and The Ohms.

‘Recognizable Animal’ is the second single from People Years’ debut album, ‘Animalism’, which is slated for release in April. The single follows on from ‘Roadkill’ (you can see where they’re going with this), and we can expect even more animal-themed songs after this.

The song is a mind-bending, psychedelic track that is also undeniably catchy, with a multi-layered complex instrumental that swoops and swirls inside your head (oh yes – definitely wear headphones for the full effect). Opening with a rapidly tapped cymbal, followed up by some heavy bass, and some jangly guitars, we’re transported back to the 60s – even beyond that. It’s a mind trip and a half. Swirling sounds in the right and left ears precede Beach Boy style “woos”, and thumping drums. Watch the video below, and see what animals you can recognise before you’re shown the full picture.
