Nick Andre – ‘The Mix Up’

San Francisco musician and producer Nick Andre has been in the music business for more than a decade, and is co-founder, with Eric aka E da Boss (Myron & E, The Pendletons) of Slept On Records. Having produced the likes of Gift Of Gab, Lateef The Truth Speaker, and many more, he’s established for himself a reputation as a hard worker. Now he’s released ‘The Mix Up’, a fusion of jazz and hip hop that perfectly encapsulates his talents.

Opening with a thrumming bass line, ‘The Mix Up’ quickly gives way to a stunning brush drum, with a repeated “ping” piano note. This soon becomes alternate notes, and the drum beat strengthens, and by the end of the first third of the track, we start to feel the hip hop elements, with the introduction of some trap rhythms. It’s clear that Nick is a gifted musician; he’s able to perfectly merge what on the surface would appear to be two dynamically different genres. There’s a twist at the 3 minute mark, where a Danny DeVito sounding voice interjects and tells the artist off; initially it seems on the surface to be incongruous with the rest of the track, but it actually adds to the realness – it makes it feel as though the whole piece has been performed on a street corner somewhere.

In addition to production and solo releases, Nick Andre has also recently co-scored the feature film, ‘Chasing Valentine‘, and has had his music included in ‘The Chi‘, on Showtime, and the Netflix Original, ‘Easy‘.
