Flawes was formed by frontman Josh Carruthers – aka JC – back in the summer of 2015. JC, and Josh Hussey, aka Huss, who plays drums, were friends from their childhood in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, and each had moved to London – independent of the other – after spending time in various bands throughout their teens. JC toured for two years as part of Ella Eyre’s band; she was so impressed with him that she booked him as her support – for her upcoming tour…in three months. This proved a bit of a quandary for JC, who realised he’d better very quickly get a band together. Meeting up with Huss completely by chance sealed the deal on his involvement, and a further introduction to Twickenham-based guitarist Freddie Edwards, and a single rehearsal, saw the genesis of Flawes as a real band. Phew.
BBC Introducing decided that their lead single, ‘Don’t Wait For Me’, was worthy of their Record Of The Week slot on Radio 1, and consequently it rose to the 8th spot on Spotify’s Viral Chart, as well as being chosen for the trailers of US TV series, ‘Lie To Me’. What then followed was a blur of activity resulting from their new fame, including shows, airports, festivals, and not to forget songwriting – with much more music to come.
Flawes’ most recent release, ‘Ghost Town’, features Philly alt-pop singer ROZES. The video for the track is directed by Dan Centrone, and it’s a haunting reminder that even when someone is close, our connection can feel worlds apart. The clip is set in a blue, smoke-filled room, opening with JC holding a ring in his hand. He and ROZES sing of a romance that’s become distant, all the while flipping through scrapbooks and writing in journals. Sometimes they’re in separate rooms, sometimes they’re together, but they’re definitely united on the one front, that of trying to get out of a love that’s grown cold.
