Natasha Jane Julian – ‘Mechanical Heart’

We first met Natasha Jane Julian back in August last year, with her song, ‘Thinking Twice‘. She comes from a small town in California, and the sun comes through hot and dreamy through her music. She’s also lived in Paris, performed in the UK, and Finland, so Europe is well and truly there too. Natasha’s latest single, ‘Mechanical Heart’, is about the rush of tech, and how complicated we’re making the world.

Back home in Southern California, Natasha Jane, or NJJ as she is known to her fans, completely immersed herself in the entertainment industry, where she’s formed a partnership with Grammy award winning UK producer, Dom Morley.

‘Mechanical Heart’ is the pair’s latest collaboration, and builds up on the success of their previous releases, and takes its inspiration from confessional art-rock, trip-hop, and film soundtracks. Morley takes his work with Kate Walsh, The Verve, and Amy Winehouse, and provides NJJ with a tale of modern alienation, while giving it the pulse it needs.

Likewise, the music video also has European roots with director Zachary Denman a Londoner who makes the City as much a star as the rest of the characters of the clip. He shows London as inviting in one scene, impersonal in the next; NJJ walks the streets and underground stations with an intimacy of one who knows them well – which she does. Nonetheless, there’s still a detachment in her presence; yet there’s a balance struck between sensual allure and open-hearted compassion, which has become to an extent, NJJ’s signature as a pop artist.
