Baker Grace – ‘Sad Summer’

‘Sad Summer’, from Baker Grace is, contrary to the trend, an anti-summer song.

New Jersey teen singer Baker Grace makes music that’s just as catchy as any other pop star, but she’ll never put on a fake smile: if she’s not happy, she’ll let you know.

‘Sad Summer’ matches frank, subtly funny lyrics to a propulsive beat and a bass groove. In Darren Craig’s colourful clip, Baker Grace is surrounded by girls licking ice cream cones, and boys with surfboards, but she’s not having any of it. She’s got a cone as well, but hers is decorated with an image of a scorpion. By the end of the clip, she’s covered in ice cream drippings, and when it rains, it pours from the underside of her umbrella.
