Stef Chura – ‘Scream’

‘Midnight’, the second album from Stef Chura, has only been out for a short while, and yet is being declared to be among the very best albums of this year. ‘Midnight’ delivers on the promise Stef showed on her debut project, her 2017 release ‘Messes’, which saw Pitchfork praise her commanding presence and self-assurance. New single, ‘Scream’, although a mere two minutes long, contains more musical ideas, attitude, and fierceness than most entire albums do.

She has plenty to say – as she always does – about supressed rage, the power of distraction, and the alienation caused by social media; and she puts it all together along with a wonderfully cutting guitar riff, and with just the right amount of an audible sneer. Approaching a headline tour which will see Chura covering North America from coast to coast, ‘Scream’ is sure to become a live performance highlight and a firm fan favourite.

In the video for the song, directed by Ambar Navarro, we see Chura dressed as a cheerleader performing in a high school gymnasium. The rest of the video is pure high school drama of the most kinetic kind: notebook scrawls and kissing in the halls, and questionable acts in bathroom stalls. Chura she addresses the camera with the perfect composure of a budding star.
