King Ropes – ‘California Stars’

Describing themselves as, a “psychedelic, hard country garage roots rock band”, King Ropes’ new single, ‘California Stars’ is a ponderous pounding pysch track that has strong overtones of Tom Waits. It’s from their new album, ‘Gravity And Friction’, which is set for release on July 26.

There’s a nearly orchestral section of ‘California Stars’, right near the end – it’s made with a guitar but could just as easily be done with a double bass/cello, a 2-3 second piece of repeated notes, which call to mind the likes of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. It’s bold and brash and contrasts nicely with the rest of the trancey vibed track. The powerfully emotive bass just snarls out of the track, while the languorous vocals drawl along, with just the faintest edge of anger attached to them. It’s an attractive track in the best sense of the word; you can’t help yourself slapping that replay over and over. The perfect track for a lazy laid back summer Sunday morning.
