Jonny Dee is a San Diego-based musician, whose style is rap – with a twist. A multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Jonny takes his sound from artists of the 60s and 70s, including David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and Prince.
Jonny sets himself apart from other rappers of today: his approach is not to sing about money, women, and drugs, but rather his focus is on self-love, romance, and introspection. ‘You’ has a definite psych sound to it, and it’s no wonder some consider him to be a “hippie rapper”. He blends rock, pop, a lot of funk and soul, with psych, before rapping in free-flow over the gorgeous instrumental.
Jonny Dee’s debut album, ‘The Human Experience’, was released in Spring last year, and layered a variety of genres over the core rock sound, coming together in what he has dubbed, “psychedelic hip hop”. He recorded the initial demos in his apartment in La Jolla, and later had them re-recorded and mixed by sound engineer Sean Powers. Jonny’s vision was for this album to be,
“A guide to find freedom from the everyday struggles in our world.”
The video for ‘You’ sees Jonny utterly devoted to the lady of his dreams. He’s also the dream lover of Teodora Marcella, and, so far as she’s aware, he exists only in her imagination. Both fantasise about the other, and eventually – at the end of the clip, Jonny attracts Teodora’s attention by playing a guitar solo outside her window. True love blossoms.
Don’t we all love a happy ending!
