Dan Says – Week 10

Another week…another tale from the city.

I went to see ‘Hair’ at New Wimbledon Theatre on Saturday & it was all kinds of bonkers. I’d originally planned to see the 2010 revival of ‘Hair’ in the West End but it never materialised. The current tour version is certainly an eye opener as it’s ridden with nudity, drug use & a political narrative. A key highlight for me had to be Natalie Green, whose range vocally was breathtaking.

My favourite moment of the weekend had to be my Dominos though. I haven’t had it in so long & with the need-to-diet-for-May diet starting on Monday. It may be my last for a while.

Kelly Clarkson – ‘Broken & Beautiful’

Kelly Clarkson - Broken & Beautiful (from the movie UglyDolls) [Official Lyric Video]

Kelly is without a doubt in my top 5 favourite artists. Her versatility as a singer & songwriter continues to excite me all these years later. ‘Broken & Beautiful’ heralds writing credits from P!nk and you can tell as the track does feel very ‘P!nk comeback single’ which isn’t particularly a bad thing but you know that Kelly can do better…the track is only a soundtrack single for her movie ‘Uglydolls’ though so its cute, empowering message serves a purpose.

Aly & AJ – ‘Church’

“I do bad things for the sake of good times I don’t regret” opens the newest release from Aly & AJ and from that moment, you will be enchanted. The track uses a whole bunch religious imagery to characterise poor life choices “I need redemption for sins I can’t mention” and the continual self loathing with “I do bad things” with its vocoder feels like an array of harmonic vocals… like a choir. The track is simply fascinating lyrically & sonically it has this 80s pulsating beat to it.

Zara Larsson – ‘Don’t Worry Bout Me’

Zara Larsson - Don't Worry Bout Me (Official Audio)

‘Don’t Worry Bout Me’ serves as the second single from the untitled ZL2 and its been teased for a fair few months now & it does not disappoint. The track is a kiss off to an ex lover in the most perfect & savage manner “now that you’re hurting like hell / you see things that remind me of you everywhere / just know that I am fine tonight”. The track is a cute, little pop ditty and I can imagine it’ll go off during Zara’s live sets.

Nate Simpson – ‘Hurt’

Nate Simpson - Hurt

‘Hurt’ serves as the newest release from West End star Nate Simpson & the song is a vocal bliss. It sees Nate lamenting over a poor relationship over a piano instrumental “pain was the price that I paid”. The track is reeked in heartbreak and whilst Nate’s strong vocals empower, the heartbreak and pain soaked in the lyrics make the track one big sob fest to listen to.

Emma Bunton – ‘You’re All I Need To Get By’ (Feat. Jade Jones)

Emma Bunton - You're All I Need to Get By (feat. Jade Jones) (Official Audio)

Emma’s solo comeback is one of 2019’s most exciting moments & even though the album is ridden with covers, it’s simply a blessing to have Emma’s voice back in our lives. ‘You’re All I Need To Get By’ is a family affair with husband taking over reigns of the vocals and Emma’s son starting the song. The song maintains Emma’s 60’s sound & the song is a cute little affair. I’m personally a little obsessed with Emma’s backing vocals.

Lil’ Kim – ‘Go Awff’

Lil' Kim - Go Awff (Official Video)

The Queen of rap recently announced that she’s dropping a new album ‘Nine’ in May and I’m not overly sure if ‘Go Awff’ is the first single from it but I’m obsessed with it! It literally goes off! It has this really catchy hook and whilst the track is slightly autotuned; it really does live up to it’s title.

I actually caught up with the Rebel Wilson movie ‘Isn’t It Romantic?’ on Netflix on Sunday evening & the whole thing is one hysterical bundle of joy. There’s just something about her humour that makes me die.
