‘City Girl’ is the new single from Tally Spear, and follows on from her debut EP, ‘Fade To White’, which she released in the spring last year.
Tally Spear released her EP to critical acclaim, but there was something that didn’t quite feel right. Despite garnering nearly 200,000 streams for her single, ‘Days Like These’, and enjoying performances at festivals such as Black Deer, and VegFest, she decided to take a break, and allow her creativity to have a bit of a breather. She took time out from performance, and even stepped away from social media, and immersed herself in a journey of self-discovery.
The five months she took away from the front lines of music weren’t wasted however. She spent the time writing new material at British Grove Studios, alongside writer and producer, Martin Hollis, who’s also worked with the likes of Adele, Mark Ronson, and Tom Walker. During these sessions Tally went through a musical transition:
“Something just happened with my taste. I just went through a change of what I was listening to when I was writing. It just became this new sound. I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to do in terms of production.”
Tally found inspiration from artists such as Alice Merton, and Sigrid, and accordingly, her new single, ‘City Girl’, is one of great contrasts. The track is a twisted love story, about finding your feet and place within a big city, and it has an addictively forthright hook, alongside some raucous guitars and strings, buoyed up by a rollicking drum beat.
The lyrics that tell a poignant tale of detachment, and independence. It’s a rockier track than we’ve come to expect from Tally Spear, and could well see her drawing comparisons with Avril Lavigne.
”I grew up in the city, and I’ve never lived anywhere else. It’s a strong part of who I am and how I think. Living in London, you’re always surrounded by people…by the hustle and bustle of everyone’s lives. But you can feel lonely just the same. ‘City Girl’
is about feeling detached from the people around you, despite living in one of the most highly populated cities in the world. It’s also an ode to independence…”
