Mountain Lions – ‘California’

‘California’ is the first track released by indie folk act, Mountain Lions, from his new album’, We Are’. The solo project of Steve Diaz, it’s the culmination of five years of songwriting and story-telling.

Diaz says of Mountain Lions:

“I wanted to expose honest emotions with these songs. Some of them have to do with death, some songs focus on internal struggles, and some are simply descriptions of beautiful moments that we all may have experienced.”

Moving to Cleveland, Ohio four years ago to join The Lighthouse And The Whaler, he toured with the band for three years before realising he also had his own story to tell, and started devoting himself to writing songs with a new awareness.

“We are constantly discovering ourselves through good times and bad. These songs pull deeply from those emerging experiences.”

‘California’, the first release from his album, ‘We Are’, invites the listener in with its upbeat melody. It tells the tale of setting your sights on a goal, while at the same time being present for the entire journey. It’s an “On The Road’ style track:

“It has some ties to Jack Kerouac because the road is a fun place to be, especially in between landmarks. For me, it’s a reminder to enjoy the process and not wish that I was there already.”
