Dom Champ’s ‘I Feel Better’ (ft Li Laurent) Combines The Heartfelt Honesty Of The Streets With The No Nonsense Of Eminem

Dom Champ is an independent poet and hip hop artist from Brighton. He’s got a sound which is inspired by the classic rap artists like Eminem, and the storytelling honest sound of The Streets. This raw heartfelt sound is certainly apparent in his latest single, ‘I Feel Better’, on which he is accompanied by the beautiful vocals of Li Laurent.

The track is essentially a love song: the singer’s love for the drink (“I drink too much but when I drink oh I feel better”); his love for his friends; and his love for his girlfriend. “I feel the love is it real love? No I’m just drunk”.

There’s something about it which reminds us of ‘Fairytale Of New York’ – it might be Li’s vocals, or the subject matter: the tempo is somewhat slower but there’s certainly something about it. Listening we’re drawn in to the story, the hopelessness of it all, wondering what will happen, will the singer realise that he needs to do something about his drinking, or risk his girl, his friends, and his life, or will he let them all fall by the wayside because he prefers the feeling better that drinking gives him.

‘I Feel Better’ is a sobering and brutally honest, introspection of a song. The instrumentation is more complex on inspection than it first seems, with a full band. This isn’t hip hop as we’ve come to know it, it’s something more. The final chorus from the thronged crowd in the pub is a very nice touch, giving it a football chant vibe, and again, adding to its relatability.
