Sounding like a Molotov cocktail thrown into a crowded bar at closing time, Diamonds & Whiskey’s ‘Hands Down’, from their debut album, ‘Dark Country Voodoo’, is a resilient anthem the US could use right now.
Recorded at The Recovery Room Studios, Seattle, Washington, and captured perfectly by that city’s multi-genre producer Graig Markel (Dead Ship Sailing), its rousing lyrics are terrifically sung by Jenny Webb, adding bass to partner Von Bury’s cut-throat Stones-C&W guitar, and taken home by the crunch of Christopher McKinney’s drums. Markel also adds a bit of percussion and lap steel to fill the air with sweet, smokey tension.
Brought together by Craigslist, Diamonds and Whiskey’s first album ‘Dark Country Voodoo’ evokes growing up in kudzu and debris, among corrupt priests and criminals – but finding magic in the light later. Starting as a covers duo, they soon became prolific and once they started recording Markel increased their canon from three tracks to a full length.
They’ve faced down a tavern full of bikers in Sturgis, South Dakota, simply by playing their butts off, enthralling the rowdy crowd. One listen to ‘Hands Down’ and you’ll be ready to throw down some hot spicy shots and rock with the band and any crowd they hypnotize with sultry, Southern charm.
