Joan Torres’s All Is Fused – ‘Of the Musical’

Joan Torres is the bassist and composer of jazz fusion ensemble All Is Fused, which he has led since 2011. Together they have released 3 albums and been nominated for various awards, including the Vox Pop award in the Fusion Album category, which they won at the 14th Annual Independent Music Awards, 2016. Their most recent album, ‘Of The Musical’, has this year seen them nominated at the IMAs in three separate categories: best Funk/Fusion/Jam, best Jazz album, and their track ‘Demiurge’ has received a nomination for best music producer in the jazz category.

In addition to Torres, All Is Fused comprises Sergio Gonzalez and Gabriel Vicéns on guitars, Fernando Garcia and Gerson Orjuela on drums, Emanuel Rivera on piano, and Jonathan Suazo on alto sax.

Music from ‘Of The Musical’, their third album, was first debuted at The Center, in San Francisco, in June 2016, and was recorded at the historic Different Fur Studios in that city later that month, with mixing and mastering by Grammy winner Dave Darlington. ‘Of The Musical’ was released in late 2016.

The eight track album, Of The Musical’, opens with ‘Invaded’, a sax and drums heavy number which is more funk than jazz, but nonetheless very appealing. The previously mentioned ‘Demiurge’ is possibly more traditional jazz fusion, in the Miles Davis style, while third track ‘Explore’ does exactly what it says on the tin, and explores various sounds, sounding something akin to Pink Floyd at their most experimental.

Our favourite is track six, ‘Stream Of Melody’, which opens more slowly and subtly with gentle piano before unleashing the rest of the instruments.
