Big Thief – ‘Mythological Beauty’

With the ethereal sound of Adrianne Lenker’s voice Brooklyn’s Big Thief have been drawing growing audiences into its emotional soundscapes for the past two years. Their latest track, ‘Mythological Beauty’, is the first track from their second album, ‘Capacity’, set for release on 9 June.

Big Thief are soon set to release their second album, ‘Capacity’, and there is much anticipation surrounding the record. Their debut, ‘Masterpiece’, was met with critical acclaim, and described by the All-Music Guide as “a wall-to-wall artful expression”. Pitchfork further added to this, praising the songwriting, and the band’s sense of balance.

‘Mythological Beauty’ is a trance-psych style track, with a real California feel. The song is based on an actual event, an injury the songwriter suffered when she was very young. As Adrianne explains:

” ‘Mythological Beauty’ reveals the origin of the scar on the right side of my head. It is a conversation between parent and child; between child and child; between the child within the parent and the child within the child; and between the parent within the child and the parent within the parent.”

The video shows Lenker with bandmate and longtime collaborator, Buck Meek, as adventurers, taking a trip over a snow-covered mountain. Adrianne is very alert and wary, a contrast to Buck, who is shaky, and struggling to keep up. He falls, exhausted, and she picks him up, slings him over her shoulders, and keeps going. Next we see fellow bandmates James Krivchenia and Max Oleartchik (as well as Lenker’s mother) come together in a magical ritual in order to save him.

Pre-order ‘Capacity’ from the band’s website, and iTunes, and find out more about Big Thief online on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and SoundCloud. Stream their music on Spotify.
