Owen – ‘Settled Down’

Using the pseudonym ‘Owen’, Mike Kinsella isn’t you’re usual singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. Hailing from Chicago, he’s been satisfying his fans for over twenty years, as well being involved in a number of groundbreaking projects. Now Owen has released their new single, ‘Settled Down’, along with a stunning music video.

‘Settled Down’ comes from Owen’s ninth studio album, ‘The King Of Whys’, which was produced by S. Carey, known for work with Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, Mason Jennings, as well as his own music. Taking 18 days last winter, it was put together at April Base Studios in Eu Claire, Wisconsin, and is Owen’s most inspired and evocative album so far.

The album paints a portrait of a restless artist, who grapples with doubt and the ghosts of the past. He has a need for emotional release, and searches for meaning by use of candour and creativity.

‘Settled Down’ is accompanied by a beautiful video, directed by Dan Huiting and Brendan Lauer, in Minneapolis. Showing Kinsella as married with children, the video shows four different views of his everyday life. Lyrics such as

“I’m bored again

Torn between giving in and getting lost for good

The silence sits in my throat”

show that although he loves his life and family, he still nonetheless pines for the past.  Speaking about the video, Kinsella says:

“It was quite arduous to make. Instead of spending the whole weekend at home playing with my kids and drinking with my friends, I had to go to Minneapolis and play with other people’s kids and drink with new friends.”
