New York City’s Christina Rubino brings a new vibe to a classic style with her album, ‘Godspeed and Guns’.
Produced by Jerry Farley, the album is filled to the brim with addictive progressions, soulful vocals, and a very alternative edge. The songs, although diverse from each other, nonetheless come together under much of a common theme. The title track finds its inspiration in the effects of childhood trauma, and the sad difficult way it can manifest itself later in life. Christina uses it as a catharsis to release herself from it all.
The song is accompanied by a a magnificent video, which owes a lot to Thelma and Louise, while the song itself has a real Tex-mex feel to it, with Latin guitar playing from Johnny Phillips, and the brass instrumentation.
The video for ‘Godspeed and Guns’ focuses on sisters Christina and Dolores, who hit the road in their classic convertible, with the number plate, ‘3VILL’. Not long after they start their trip, they find themselves on a violent path of self defence and retribution, against a variety of abusers. There’s a dark humour to the video, the pair get the taste for murder, and with that, dismemberment. The final scene is a major revelation: Christina has all along been a figment of Dolores’ imagination, and has been all her life.
