Essential Covers: John Grimes – ‘Dancing On My Own’ (Calum Scott Cover)

Essential Covers

We’ve not done an Essential Cover for a while, but when we heard this one last night, we couldn’t let it slip by. Check out John Grimes from Jedward, with his cover of ‘Dancing On My Own’. Originally by Swedish singer Robyn, John’s version is essentially a cover of a cover by Calum Scott.

John’s version, played on his Gibson guitar, hasn’t been edited or autotuned in any way – in a comment on the video on YouTube he said he just recorded using the mic from the camera, and uploaded it straight from there. It’s a heartfelt and emotional rendering of the song and we challenge you not to have a tear in your eye by the end of it. We love John’s tender and stirring voice, and can hear his hurt and sadness throughout. In a word, it’s beautiful.

John and Edward celebrated their 25th birthday last Sunday, and commemorated the event with a concert at the O2 Academy Islington, London. It was a sell out show, with highlights including this song, and their newest release, ‘Hologram’.

John has said he’ll upload covers on a more regular basis – we’re certainly looking forward to hearing them!

You can download ‘Hologram’ from iTunes, Amazon, Google Play Store, and HMV Digital. Streaming is available from Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music.
